Here's a truth bomb: You're probably paying to move stuff you don't even want.
Think about itβevery box you pack costs money to move. Every item you don't need takes up space in your new home. And every minute you spend packing things you'll never use is a minute you could spend on something that actually matters.
That's why professional organizers swear by the 5-Box Methodβa simple system that helps you make quick decisions about everything you own. No overthinking. No "maybe later." Just five categories and a clear path to a lighter, more organized move.
π Less Stuff = Easier Move
BoxBuddy helps you track what you actually keep. Know exactly what's in every box!

Here's the system. Every item you touch goes into one of five categories:
KEEP
I use this regularly and it belongs in my new home
DONATE
Someone else could use this. It's in good condition
SELL
This has value. I can make some moving money
TOSS
Broken, expired, or unusable. Time to go
MEMORIES
I don't use it, but I can't part with it yet
How to Use the 5-Box Method
Step 1: Gather Your Supplies
Before you start, you'll need:
- 5 boxes or bins (labeled clearly)
- Trash bags
- A timer (your phone works!)
- Energy and a decisive mindset
Step 2: Work Room by Room
Don't try to declutter your entire house at once. Start with one room and finish it before moving on. I recommend this order:
- Closets β Clothes are easier decisions than sentimental items
- Bathroom β Lots of easy tosses (expired products)
- Kitchen β Gadgets and pantry items
- Living areas β Books, decor, electronics
- Bedrooms β Save sentimental items for last
- Storage areas β The final boss
Step 3: The 20-Minute Rule
Set a timer for 20 minutes and work fast. The time limit prevents overthinking. When the timer goes off, take a 5-minute break. Then start again.
Category-by-Category Guide
β KEEP: What Stays
Keep items that are:
- Used regularly (at least once a month)
- Serve a clear purpose in your new home
- Fit your lifestyle and space
- Bring you genuine joy (Marie Kondo was onto something)
π DONATE: Give It New Life
Donate items that are:
- In good, usable condition
- Not valuable enough to sell
- Could help someone in need
Where to donate:
- Goodwill, Salvation Army, or local thrift stores
- Women's shelters (often need household items)
- Local churches or community centers
- Schools (for craft supplies, books)
π° SELL: Turn Clutter Into Cash
Sell items that are:
- Worth at least $10-20
- In excellent condition
- In demand (electronics, furniture, designer items)
Best places to sell:
- Facebook Marketplace (local, no shipping)
- Nextdoor (trusted neighbors)
- Poshmark, ThredUp (clothes)
- Decluttr (electronics)
ποΈ TOSS: The Easy Decisions
Toss items that are:
- Broken beyond repair
- Expired (food, medicine, makeup)
- Stained, torn, or damaged
- Missing essential parts
- Outdated (old manuals, expired coupons)
π MEMORIES: The Sentimental Box
This is your "not ready to decide" box. It's for items that:
- Have emotional value
- You're not ready to part with yet
- Need more time to process
Important: This box gets sealed and stored. Revisit it in 6 months. If you haven't opened it, you probably don't need what's inside.
Room-by-Room Decluttering Tips
Closet
- If you haven't worn it in a year, donate it
- If it doesn't fit, donate it (don't wait to "lose weight")

- Toss expired spices (they lose flavor anyway)
- Donate duplicate gadgets
- Keep only the appliances you use monthly
Bathroom
- Toss expired medications (safely!)

- Keep only products you actually use

Get Early AccessThe "One Year Rule" and Other Decision Helpers
When you're stuck, use these rules:
- One Year Rule: Haven't used it in a year? Let it go.
- Duplicate Rule: Do you have more than one? Keep the best, donate the rest.
- Replacement Rule: If you needed it, could you replace it for under $20 in 20 minutes? If yes, let it go.
- Joy Rule: Does this item make you happy? Be honest.
What to Do With Your Decluttered Items
Schedule Donation Pickup
Many charities will pick up donations for free. Schedule this 1-2 weeks before moving day.
List Items for Sale Immediately
Don't wait. List items as soon as you decide to sell them. The sooner you start, the more time you have.
Toss in Batches
Don't let trash pile up. Take it out regularly. For large items, schedule a bulk pickup with your city or hire junk removal.
The Payoff: Why Decluttering Before Moving Matters
- Save money β Fewer boxes = lower moving costs
- Save time β Less to pack, less to unpack
- Start fresh β Only bring what you love and use
- Less stress β An organized move is a calmer move
- Help others β Your donations can change someone's life
