General

What is BoxBuddy?

BoxBuddy is a moving and home inventory app for iPhone and iPad. It helps you photograph, label, and track every box you pack. Each box gets a printable QR code label that anyone can scan — no app download required — to see what is inside. BoxBuddy also features voice dictation, room-based color coding, and an offline Fast Capture mode for basements and storage units.

Is there an app to organize a move?

Yes. BoxBuddy is designed specifically to organize a move. You catalog every box with photos and descriptions, assign boxes to rooms, and print QR code labels. The 60-second-per-box workflow means you never fall behind on packing day. Learn more in our guide: How to Organize Moving Boxes.

What devices does BoxBuddy run on?

BoxBuddy is available on iPhone, iPad, and the web. The native app requires iOS 16 or iPadOS 16 or later and is available exclusively on the Apple App Store.

When does BoxBuddy launch?

BoxBuddy launches on the Apple App Store on March 19, 2026. You can join the waitlist to be notified on launch day.

Is my data private and secure?

Yes. BoxBuddy uses encrypted HTTPS connections and stores data on secured servers. Only you and authorized family members can access your inventory. QR code scans can be set to private (requiring login) or public (anyone with the code can view contents). You control visibility per box. Read our full Privacy Policy.

What is a home inventory app?

A home inventory app is software that records what you own and where it is stored. BoxBuddy is a home inventory app focused on moving. It catalogs the contents of packed boxes using photos, descriptions, and voice notes so you can find items without opening every box. For a deeper look, see Best Moving Apps in America (2026).

Can I use BoxBuddy for storage, not just moving?

Absolutely. BoxBuddy works for moving, long-term storage, seasonal rotation, garage organization, or office relocation. The search and QR code features make it easy to find items months or years later without opening every box.

Features

How do the QR code labels work?

Each box gets a unique QR code when you create it in BoxBuddy. Print the label on any home printer and stick it to the box. When someone needs to know what is inside, they scan the QR code with any smartphone camera — no app download needed. The box contents, photos, and notes appear instantly in the browser. Learn more: QR Codes for Moving Boxes.

What is voice dictation in BoxBuddy?

Voice dictation lets you describe box contents by speaking instead of typing. Tap the microphone icon and say what is in the box — BoxBuddy converts your speech to text automatically. This is especially useful when your hands are full or dirty from packing. BoxBuddy is one of the first moving apps to offer voice-first input.

What is Fast Capture mode?

Fast Capture mode is BoxBuddy's rapid-logging workflow. Open a box, snap a photo, speak a description, and move on — all in under 10 seconds. It works offline, so you can use it in basements, storage units, and areas with poor WiFi. Photos and data sync automatically when you reconnect.

How do I keep track of moving boxes?

With BoxBuddy you create a digital inventory of every box. Take a photo of what is inside, add a description or voice note, and assign the box to a room. Each box gets a unique QR code label you can print and tape on. When you need to find something, search by item name or scan the QR code. Read our full guide: How to Label Moving Boxes.

How do I label boxes when moving?

BoxBuddy generates printable QR code labels for every box. Print them on a standard home printer and attach to the outside of each box. Anyone — movers, family, friends — can scan the label with a smartphone camera to instantly see what is inside, without downloading an app. Compare this to markers: Sharpie vs. QR Code Labels.

Can I search what is inside my boxes?

Yes. BoxBuddy includes instant search across all your boxes. Search by item name, box number, room name, or description. Results appear immediately so you can locate any item without opening a single box.

What are room-based color codes?

BoxBuddy lets you assign a color to each room — blue for the kitchen, green for the master bedroom, etc. That color appears on every box and label belonging to that room, so movers know exactly where each box goes at a glance. No more verbal instructions or sticky notes.

Can I add photos to each box?

Yes. You can attach multiple photos to every box — snap a picture of the contents before you seal it. Photos are compressed automatically for fast uploads and stored securely. When you scan the QR label later, photos appear alongside text descriptions.

Does BoxBuddy work offline?

Yes. Fast Capture mode works completely offline. You can log boxes in basements, garages, and storage units with no WiFi signal. BoxBuddy queues everything locally and syncs automatically when you are back online.

Can I mark boxes as fragile?

Yes. Each box can be flagged as fragile. The fragile status is visible when anyone scans the QR code, alerting movers to handle that box with extra care.

Packing & Moving Tips

How many boxes do I need for a 3-bedroom house?

A typical 3-bedroom house requires 40 to 60 moving boxes. Kitchens usually need 8–15 boxes, bedrooms 5–10 each, bathrooms 3–5, and living areas 8–12. BoxBuddy helps you track every single one with photos, descriptions, and QR codes. See our moving checklist for families for room-by-room counts.

Should I number my moving boxes?

Yes. Numbering boxes creates a quick reference system. BoxBuddy auto-numbers boxes per room (Kitchen 1, Kitchen 2, etc.) so you always know how many boxes each room has and which are accounted for. Combined with QR labels, numbering makes it trivial to verify that all boxes arrived at the new home.

What should I pack first when moving?

Start with rooms you use least — guest bedrooms, storage closets, books, and seasonal items. Save daily essentials (kitchen, bathroom, clothes) for last. Pack a first-night box with essentials you will need immediately at the new home. Read more: The First-Night Box Guide.

How do I pack a kitchen for moving?

Kitchens are typically the most box-heavy room. Wrap fragile items individually, use dish-pack boxes for plates and bowls, and fill dead space with packing paper. BoxBuddy's fragile flag alerts movers to handle delicate kitchen boxes with care. Full guide: How to Pack a Kitchen for Moving.

What is a first-night box?

A first-night box (also called an essentials box or open-first box) contains everything your family needs for the first 24 hours at the new home: toiletries, medications, phone chargers, snacks, a change of clothes, paper towels, and basic tools. BoxBuddy lets you label it clearly and flag it so you unpack it first. Details: First-Night Box Guide.

How do I move with kids?

Involve kids in the process — let them choose a color for their room in BoxBuddy and photograph their favorite toys. Keep routines consistent, and pack a "kid essentials" box with comfort items, snacks, and activities. Read our full guide: Moving with Kids: The Complete Guide.

How long does it take to pack a house?

A 2-bedroom apartment takes 2–4 days. A 3-bedroom house takes 5–8 days. A 4+ bedroom home can take 1–2 weeks. These estimates assume 3–4 hours of packing per day. With BoxBuddy's 60-second-per-box workflow, the documentation time is nearly zero — you spend your time packing, not writing on sticky notes. Plan ahead: Week-by-Week Moving Checklist.

What is the best way to organize boxes in a storage unit?

Place frequently-accessed boxes near the front. Stack heavier boxes on the bottom. Leave an aisle down the center. Label every box with a QR code so you can scan and search without moving stacks. BoxBuddy's offline Fast Capture mode works even in storage units with no WiFi.

Technical

Do I need a special printer for the labels?

No. BoxBuddy labels print on any standard home printer using regular paper. You can also use adhesive label sheets for a more permanent attachment. The QR codes are designed to be scannable even when printed small.

Do movers need the app to scan QR codes?

No. Anyone can scan a BoxBuddy QR code with any smartphone camera — iPhone or Android. The box contents open in the browser instantly. No app download, no account, no login required. This is a key difference from competitors like Sortly, which require the Sortly app to scan.

How are photos stored?

Photos are compressed on your device (JPEG, max 1600px) before being uploaded to BoxBuddy's secured servers over HTTPS. This keeps uploads fast even on cellular connections. Photos are stored in your account and are only accessible to you and your shared family members.

Can I delete my account and data?

Yes. You can delete your account at any time from the Settings page. All of your data — boxes, photos, rooms, and moves — will be permanently deleted within 30 days. We comply with all applicable privacy regulations. See our Privacy Policy for details.

Is there an API or integration?

BoxBuddy does not currently offer a public API. The app is a self-contained moving tool. If you have integration needs, contact us and let us know what you are looking for.
